Sophie Rosenbaum named her stuffed bear, "Teddy". In 1939, six year-old Sophie carried the bear when she emigrated from Vienna, Austria to England on the last Kindertransport out of Europe. The Kindertransports (German for 'children's transports') were organized rescue efforts that took place during the nine months prior to the outbreak of World War II. The United Kingdom took nearly 10,000 predominantly Jewish children from Nazi Germany, Nazi-occupied Austria, Czechoslovakia, Poland, and the Free City of Danzig and resettled them in British foster homes, hostels, schools and farms. Often, these children were the only members of their families to survive.
