London, United Kingdom

Shield shaped suffrage banner part of Mary Lowndes Famous Women Series. Commemorates Victoria 'Queen and Mother'. 'Victoria Queen & Mother' is in cloth-of-gold letters, and three lions are edged in gilt braid, on deep pink velvet. The Suffrage movement used the double image of Victoria as a Queen & Mother to bridge the gulf between private and political life.

The banner was designed by Lowndes for the National Union of Women's Suffrage Societies procession on 13 June 1908. Carried by Maud Arncliffe-Sennett it was one of 800 banners to take part in the march through central London to a rally in the Albert Hall in support of 'votes for women'.
