Executed in 1943, 'Sun' is typical of Hannah Frank's characteristic black-and-white drawings, made in a style she developed while at the Glasgow School of Art, where they frequently appeared in the GUM (Glasgow University Magazine). Incorporating elements of the Art Nouveau period and influenced by Aubrey Beardsley and Jessie King, 'Sun' contains a Pre-Raphaelite attention to detail and a joyful, almost visionary, female presence.
