The sunken gardens in Grant Park were a popular leisure destination for Atlantans and visitors alike at the end of the nineteenth and early twentieth century. In 1890, 44 acres were added to the north side of the park, and new amenities added including, a long slender lake popular for boating, a Victorian boathouse, a
pavilion, and a concession building. A new municipal zoo was established in 1889 from the donation of animals from a failed circus.
