In response to the growth in popularity of surfing in the early 1960s Australian surfing magazines started to appear, detailing what was happening in surfing in Australia. Jack Eden was a photographer and saw the advantage f aligning his work with stories about local surfers and beaches. This magazine, featuring indigenous Australian themes in its cover art, is the 1st Edition of 'Surf About' a quarterly magazine published from August 1962 to 1968. The name itself was an adaptation of the indigenous term "Walk About".
