The collection of Sussex chairs has been offered by Morris & Company since 1865. The model is based on an old type of chair from the rural area around Sussex. The variation of the design with a round seat is attributed to the Pre-Raphaelite Ford Madox Brown in the magazine "The Furnisher". Brown was one of the founders of the original Morris, Marshall, Faulkner & Co company in 1861, later renamed Morris & Co.
