Sustaining the Spirit

This guitar was found in the remains of the Lodz ghetto just after the war. Its origin is unknown. It was donated by Mrs E. Glowicz, whose husband "came in on the first transport from Germany after the war to his hometown of Lodz. They were dismantling the Jewish ghetto. Mr Glowicz noticed the guitar and took it.” The Glowiczes immigrated to Australia in 1965 and brought the guitar with them.

The guitar has sustained some damage and has noticeable wear and tear on the veneer from use. A Star of David and the word 'Lodz' is inscribed in pen just below the neck. One can speculate that the guitar sustained the spirit of people incarcerated in the ghetto. Its survival is remarkable as all cultural practices were forbidden and any musical instruments discovered by Nazi officials were seized.
