The best descriptions of Swamiji around this time have been given by his master, Sri Ramakrishna. On a certain occasion the Master said to the disciples present, pointing to Narendranath, “Behold! Here is Naren. See! See! Oh what power of insight he has! It is like the shoreless sea of radiant knowledge! The Mother, Mahamaya Herself, cannot approach within less than ten feet of him! She is barred by the very glory which She has imparted to him!” ❊ ❊ ❊ Friday, April 9, 1886 Master: (By a sign) I have seen that He and the one who dwells in my heart are one and the same Person. Narendra: Yes, Yes! Soham—I am He. Master: But only a line divides the two—that I may enjoy divine bliss. Narendra: (to M.) Great souls, even after their own liberation, retain the ego and experience the pleasure and pain of the body that they may help others to attain liberation. (GSR, 949)
