Alexis Lavigne was not the only person to research the human dimensions in the 19th century.
While Lavigne's analysis aimed to establish a gradation system to support his profession as master tailor, Bertillon applied this research on measurement to criminality. With 14 key measurements (hands, ears, forearms, etc.), he was also able to provide the French legal system with a way of identifying suspects.
