In the Baroque period, people used to deliberately match their jewellery to the garments they were wearing. Representative brooches, worn below the neckline, were now given preference over pendants, which had been popular in the Mannerist period. Known as “Sévigné brooches”, horizontally oval brooches featuring bow-shaped elements were widespread adornments.
