Sumida, Japan

This tobacco tray has a unique design related to farming. The boards surrounding the tray serve to protect flames from the wind. The ornaments attached to both sides, which are decorated with straw, represent night-soil bucket used for carrying fertilizer. The handle of the tray imitates a carrying pole of night-soil bucket. A rural landscape and falconry equipment are depicted on the boards. The tray as a whole treats the peasant's life, but in contrast, it is gorgeously decorated in gold maki-e.
