Tabakobon (tobacco tray)

The surface of this tray is filled with "nadeshiko" (pinks) depicted in maki-e. Nadeshiko has been popular among Japanese since the Heian period (794-1192), and often was used as a decorative pattern. The flower colors are skillfully expressed using gold and silver powders.
