Antwerp, Belgium

This table cloth consists of squares alternatively in white linen with white work embroidery and knotted net darned with floral designs. The border is in bobbin lace with a lattice design. Embroidery on knotted net was already done in Europe in the 14th century, but the white work embroidery and bobbin lace as shown here are innovations of the 16th century. As shown in many paintings and engravings elaborate, table cloths like this one were much in use by the end of the 16th century and would remain stylish for almost 50 years in many European countries. Comparing it with published pattern books for lace and embroidery of the period, unfortunately, does not really help in determining its exact provenance.
