Early furniture from the Delaware Valley is extremely rare; however, several features on this table suggest its early 18th-century origins: a massively constructed stretcher system, the molded edges along the bottoms of the drawer front and rails, and the use of a widely overhanging top. An inscription placed inside the drawer in 1900 notes that the table belonged to the wealthy Quaker family of Asher Woolman. The Woolmans lived near Rancocas, New Jersey, across the Delaware River from Philadelphia, where they may have purchased the table.
