Tairiiri (Fan)

Tairiiri. Fan. Composite tairiiri woven from rauara (pandanus leaf) with dyed apuraka (giant swamp taro) and fabric akamanea (decorative) overlay and mauranga (handle) rakau (wooden). The blade is in shape of a diamond. Plaited commencement at centre of blade. Woven out in check from the centre to form lower edge and sides of blade. Dyed-black and dyed-red overlaid strips of apuraka and red fabric form patterns across the blade. Blade terminates at single apex.
