Tanner's workshop

Sevilla, Spain

Tanneries have practically disappeared from Andalusia. Traditionally they supplied raw material to a series of extremely important trades, such as shoemakers, but the reduction in leather crafting and the importing of industrial hides have caused them to disappear.

The traditional tanning process was long and laborious; a year and a half was required for a good finish and the main elements involved were water, lime, salt and tannin bark. The pieces from this workshop are from Ubrique in Cádiz, which continues to produce a large amount of leather. However, while tanning disappeared from the town, today the leather trade is supplied with raw materials from abroad.
