China painting workshop

Museo de Artes y Costumbres Populares de Sevilla

Museo de Artes y Costumbres Populares de Sevilla
Sevilla, Spain

This installation is a reproduction of a china painting workshop from the Cartuja Monastery in Seville, at which people decorated tableware and artistic ceramics for the most part.

Chinaware for the table or for adornments has its origins in the royal porcelain factories of the 18th century. The crisis these factories faced in the 19th century led to the search for new and cheaper processes, such as engraved prints, that were aimed at a wider public. Despite the introduction of these new industrial techniques, strictly artisinal production was maintained, such as painting by hand, either freehand or using stencils to mark out the outline.
