Cooke made his living depicting local people and landscapes, mainly in Virginia, Georgia, Louisiana and Alabama. This image shows Tallulah Falls, in the mountains of northeast Georgia, a resort destination from the 19th century to the present. Dubbed "the Niagara of the South," it attracted tourists by standing as an American emblem of unblemished and powerful wilderness. Several tourists are visible in the image.
