Wooden shelving unit: a miniature replica of typical Japanese ornamental shelving. These miniature pieces of furniture were found with the hina-ningyō dolls that were displayed in Japanese homes during the Hinamatsuri festival, or Girls' Day. This is celebrated annually on March 3 to remember girls' presence in homes. This unit has four shelves and a small closed wardrobe with two doors in the middle-left section. It also has a black Japanese urushi lacquer and is decorated with swirling plant motifs, between which there are flowers that have been created using the maki-e technique where a fine gold dust is applied to the fresh, lacquer surface.
