Tara, advanced sentinel of the Arctic

Early explorers calculated their position using the sextant and chronometer. They also had to fix an artificial horizon (at the time, a plate filled with mercury) because Arctic sea ice is never flat. The horizon is blocked by numerous compression ridges caused by overlapping plates of ice which collide in the drifting action.
