Tasse

1587 - 1599

Museo Lázaro Galdiano

Museo Lázaro Galdiano
Madrid, Spain

This tasse is part of a set of twelve that was dedicated to the so-called twelve Caesars, according to the work De vita Caesarum by Gaius Suetonius (ca. 69-140), and it is inspired by the narrated episodes.

It is the first in the series, because it is dedicated to Julius Caesar, as it says in the inscription on the base - IVLIVS - and the episodes narrated on the plate: the siege of Avaricum, the crossing of the Rubicon, Pompey's cavalry in the Battle of Pharsalus, and the triumphal entry of Caesar in Rome.

The set of tasses used to belong to the cardinal Ippolito Aldobrandini, Pope Clement VIII from 1592.
