Described by critics as a “cosmic sculptor”, Eliseo Mattiacci has always
been fascinated by metals, their energy, and the almost pyrotechnical process of welding. The submissive malleability displayed by this material in its encounter with flame leads him to experiment with volumes that explore the fluid, airy dimension of form, creating ensembles that float in space like unknown star systems.
His mastery of technique is such that he is practically able to “draw with the welding
iron”: “Global Time was born as the idea of a work of draughtsmanship. The
rod of ribbed steel recalls the line of a crayon by analogy. The resulting structure is
very lightweight, recalling the swiftness of execution peculiar to drawing.” (CELANT,
2013, p. 291) The work also attests to the orientation of Mattiacci’s art as from the
1980s, when his interest came to focus systematically on science and astronomy,
space and time. (Transl. by Paul Metcalfe per Scriptum, Roma) Bibl: Eliseo Mattiacci, a cura di G. Celant, Milano 2013.
