Brocatelle based on red warps combined with two types of raw hemp weft in a satin weave. Secondary red warps are also combined with yellow pattern-wefts in a diagonal weave (dir Z). The selvedge is composed of two red satin weave bands one of which is generated by the background weave.
The large scale pattern is based on a mixed trellis design with a double framework on a checked background in which two rampant lions stand back to back together with a central floral motif involving several different types of flowers such as tulips and a flower similar to the lotus. The presence of the lions suggests that the fabric may have been designed for heraldic purposes.
The decidedly exotic nature of the pattern reflects the popularity of oriental products circulated at the time by the Company of the Indies.
An identical example is found in the Kunstgewerbemuseum in Cologne, while other similar examples are included in the collections of several European and American museums.
