Thavil is a barrel-shaped percussion instrument, commonly used in folk music as well as classical music with nagaswaram in an ensemble known as periya melam. The drum is made of jack wood. The right head is played by the right hand, wrist, fingers and left head is struck with a stick held in the left hand. The instrument is hung by a strap from the shoulder of the player when played in open air performances.
