It is not known who painted this work, but the iconography is based on an engraving by Cornelis Cort. The Adoration of the Shepherds only features in the Gospel of Saint Luke; being popular in origin, the iconography is based on the better-known Adoration of the Three Kings, which this work copies in its composition.

The painting has a refined technique, as can be seen in the figures' anatomy. While the folded clothes provide a sense of corporeality, the figures' stylization is somewhat Mannerist with lengthened fingers and unnatural stances.
