The angel Gabriel announces to Mary that she has been chosen to be the mother of God but that she will keep her virginity: he thus reveals to her the mystery of the Incarnation. If she accepts, she will become a mother by the all-powerful God acting through the Holy Spirit. The Annunciation is immediately followed by the Incarnation of Jesus Christ and in this canvas everything seems to hang on Mary's answer.
