Unknownabout 1255–1260

The J. Paul Getty Museum
Los Angeles, United States

And I saw a beast coming up out of the sea, having seven heads and ten horns, and upon its horns ten crowns . . . . And the beast . . . was like a leopard, and its feet were like the feet of a bear, and its mouth like the mouth of a lion. (Apocalypse 13:1-2) From the top of a small hillock, this terrifying hybrid beast seems to confront Saint John, who pulls his cloak tightly around him. To the far right, a boat is just visible on the sea.
