The late George II Padouk and Gilded Limewood Breakfront Bookcase epitomises Chippendale's style of the 1750s that launched his career as the Shakespeare of English Furniture. A masterpiece that combines the arts of cabinet-maker, carver and inlayer, his multi-purpose bookcase was presumably commissioned for the Lady of Dumfries's Bedroom. The crowning crest pictured here was carved in limewood and finely detailed for oil gilding; the basket, presented on a water-bubbled plinth, contains harvested fruits and flowers.
