Formerly the West of England Fire Office, the Commercial Union Assurance Office in Exeter was designed by the local architect Andrew Patey and built in 1833. The entrance was topped by a statue of KIng Alfred the Great, the company's emblem. The building was severely damaged during the bombing raid of 4 May 1942 and the remains pulled down for post-war reconstruction.
