The brooch and earrings were bought by Johanna from the jeweller Henry Capt in Geneva in Switzerland in September 1866.

The oval amethyst may be large but it is a variety of quartz, which is the world’s most common mineral. Consequently, it is neither particularly expensive nor unusual, which means that large pieces can be bought for low prices. A wide gold rim and twisted fronds also contribute to a spectacular appearance.
