Renaissance and Reformation. German Art in the Age of Dürer and Cranach

Threatened by monstrous deadly sins, the Christian knight in armor is standing in the center of the image as the steadfast defender of the true faith. His sword is the word of God, his scabbard the Bible, faith his shield, and holy prayer his lance. He is resting on the legs of the peaceful Protestant change that briefly seemed possible after the Peace of Augsburg of 1555.
