The Citadel

The original road to the Citadel fortress in northern Haiti. The Citadelle Laferriere, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the largest fortress in the Americas. As a mountaintop fortress it was commissioned by King Henri Christophe in 1820. It was built by tens of thousands of former slaves to protect and defend Haiti from invaders and to demonstrate the power of the newly independent Haiti.
