The Criminal Law Amendment Act was enacted 'to make further provision for the Protection of Women and Girls, the suppression of brothels, and other purposes'. The Act also raised the age of consent to 16, deemed sexual assault on girls under 13 as felonies, and sexual assault on girls aged 13 to 16 as misdemeanours. It also made sex between men illegal and granted courts the power to imprison men found 'guilty' of the act to up to two years imprisonment.
