José Campeche (1754 – 1809) is unquestionably one of the most important Latin American painters of the 18th century. Among his best-known works is this double portrait of the daughters of Ramón de Castro, Spanish-born governor of Puerto Rico who oversaw the defense of the island against the English attack in 1797. In this painting, Campeche masterfully merges elements from Spanish and creole influences.
