The French Dauphin François was born in 1518 and died early in 1536. Court painter Jean Clouet probably painted him around 1522 - 1523, when the child was four or five years old. The royal status of the sitter is revealed by the costly clothing. His white undershirt is visible through the slashes in the low-cut doublet; on the shoulders are red velvet sleeves; and the black hat is trimmed with eiderdown. The face expresses will-power and royal dignity (royal children were given little time to be children).
