Around 1938, Frida met André Breton, the French poet, art critic, and leader of the Surrealist movement. The members of this group believed in the superior reality of dreams over wakefulness, of fantasy over reason, of the subconscious over the conscious. Kahlo never acknowledged herself as surrealist. However, works like The Dream must have led Breton to say Frida was a natural surrealist.
