The Emancipation of Slavery

The theme of social justice, evoked by the chains of slavery and applauded in numerous contemporary reviews of the art work, seems in reality to be a pretext to represent the busty and sensual female body of the African woman. The work thus reflects the widespread Orientalist taste of the time, which becomes more provocative if cloaked by impropriety and prohibition.
