UNESCO World Heritage

Historically, rainwater gently overflowed Florida’s Lake Okeechobee, providing year-round hydration for the Everglades. For the past century, however, flood control, agriculture, and development have cut off the freshwater flow, leaving the Everglades severely dehydrated during the dry season. The restoration of the Everglades will reinstate the freshwater flow needed to mitigate harmful wildfires, loss of habitat and saltwater intrusion caused by a lack of freshwater.
