The extended portion of a "flying periscope" used as an aid in flight testing jet engines, is shown on a North American B-45 bomber which is used by the General Electric Company as a "flying test bed" at its flight test laboratory near here. The periscope, extended portion of which protrudes from beneath the aircraft's nose, as examined by R. E. Leggee, Laboratory engineer, is located inside the nose of the bomber. The device brings the fifth test engine, which is extended from the bomb bay into full view of the engineer, for observation during flight testing. Without the aid of the periscope he would be unable to observe the engine during tests since the engine is located below and behind his position.
