The "civilising" pursuits manifest through education. Education policies and programmes for the Amazon have been the same as those applied to the westernised Peruvian coastline, from the first public schools of the mid-50's up to 2015.

In most cases, the schools' design has not taken into account the climate, geographic and social conditions unique to this region, where rainfall can reach 3500mm per year and seasonal floods that raise its rivers' water level in almost 15 metres in certain places.

Nowadays, out of a total of 15,000 schools in operation more than half are in constant risk of flooding, require renovations or considerable structure reinforcements and only 15% has access to water, sanitation and energy public networks.
