The Fifth Vessel: The Slandering of God

Unknownabout 1255–1260

The J. Paul Getty Museum

The J. Paul Getty Museum
Los Angeles, United States

The fifth angel poured out its vessel upon the seat of the beast, and its kingdom became dark, and they gnawed their tongues because of the pain: and they blasphemed the God of heaven because of their pains and wounds, and they did not do penance for their works.(Apocalypse 16:10-11)

The illuminator depicted the seat of the beast as covered with a blue cloth. The angel pours out the darkness from a vessel. The wicked, upon whom the darkness is falling like a curtain, gnaw their swollen tongues, even as they blaspheme God above because of their pains.
