Lee L’Clerc (b. 1960)

Lee L’Clerc is a Canadian contemporary painter. Born in France, L’Clerc pursued his university studies in Canada, settling in Toronto where he lives and works. In his paintings, everyday material objects are transformed through pictorial staging and presentation, with each object suggesting a unique iconography of images and symbols. Rich, opaque textures are created by building up the paint surface.

Dr. L’Clerc obtained his PhD from the University of Toronto and has published extensively on art and literary theory, in particular, the interrelationship between art and literature, art installation, war photography, and queer iconography. His work has been exhibited in numerous solo and group exhibitions, including the Havana Biennial. L’Clerc’s paintings are held in numerous collections, including private collections in Canada and the US.
