This work, titled The Hammer Worker was created by the South African sculptor Frederick Johannes (Frikkie) Kruger (1907-1966). For decades this particular work was thought to be that of the sculptor, Anton van Wouw. The Hammer Worker was a sculpture left by Kruger at Van Wouw's House when Kruger was a student of Van Wouw. It was gifted by Van Wouw to a visitor in 1928. In 1931, the work was exhibited at the 12th South African Academy Exhibition in Johannesburg by Frikkie Kruger and it was described by the media as an "amateurish copy of Van Wouw’s work"
