The Hands and the Arm

Barbara Hepworth1948

The Hepworth Wakefield

The Hepworth Wakefield
Wakefield, United Kingdom

Reflecting on this painting, Hepworth commented on “the arm, the tendons of which can be manipulated whilst the spirit and mind of the owner are temporarily absent – and the living, seeing and highly intelligent hands of the surgeon which are carrying out the will and knowledge of his brain – supported by the desire of his spirit to heal and create. The colour I used in this painting was a deep blue and gold – supporting the faintly translucent colour of the inanimate arm.”
