The Holy heart

18th Century

Museo del Duomo e Cattedrale di Fidenza

Museo del Duomo e Cattedrale di Fidenza

Jesus is represented in 3/5 with the chalice of the Eucharist with the holy host above, which gives light to the scene; the right hand points to the wounded heart, fluctuating on the chest, crowned with thorns and surmounted by a shining cross. The work was probably commissioned for the altar of the bishop's chapel dedicated to the Holy heart, built for the bishop Alessandro Gariberti upon the left portal of the cathedral in the last twenty years of the XVIII century. When Pious VI sojourned in Borgo San Donnino while carried in France, granted the whole indulgence to those who, in the day of the Holy heart, would have visited this chapel. Probably the painting was part of the forniture of the bishop's chaple when the pope sojourned in the city and so its execution could be dated in the 1790s and not the first years of 1800.
