Zsigmond Móricz is a prominent author of the modern Hungarian literature of the 20th century. The special Móricz collection of the Petőfi Literary Museum consisting of 16 000 heads represents the extent and significance of his bequest. The short story entitled Szegény emberek (Poor People) was written in 1916 and its title became the title of Móricz’s volume of short stories on war published in 1917. The story itself however, is not onwar, it is laid in the peaceful home front in a small Hungarian village. The soldier on furlough to pay the debt of his family living in poverty steals money and even kills two children. He follows the merciless logic of the front in civilian life, he is not relieved of the shadow of war at home, either. The command of murder becomes his own: “just as the girl... at the beginning of the war... the very first child... there in Sabac...” Contemporary reviews emphasize that no such moving psychological description was written about murder since Dostoyevky’s Raskolnikov. The short story sounding as a protest against the cruelty of war was mentioned among nominations for Nobel peace prize. The short story is of universal validity; while it is about a farmer-soldier at the same time it speaks about the “timeless” poor man who is made a murderer and a victim at the same time by his fate and by the war. Ten years later French writers, among them Henri Barbusse, expressed his acknowledgements about the short story, when it was published in the Paris journal entitled L’Humanité translated by László Gara.

Móricz Zsigmond a 20. századi modern magyar irodalom kiemelkedő prózaírója. A Petőfi Irodalmi Múzeum 16 ezer tételből álló Móricz-különgyűjteménye az író hagyatékának nagyságát és jelentőségét mutatja. A Szegény emberek 1916-ban keletkezett, címadó darabja lett Móricz 1917-ben kiadott I. világháborús témájú kötetének. Az elbeszélés mégsem háborús történet, éppen ellenkezőleg, a békés hátországban, egy kis magyar faluban játszódik. A szabadságra hazaküldött katona, azért, hogy nagy szegénységben élő családja adósságát megadja, pénzt rabol, két gyerekgyilkosságot is elkövet. A harctér könyörtelen logikáját követi a civil életben, nem mentesül otthon sem a háború árnyékától. Sajátjává válik a gyilkosság parancsa, „éppen úgy, mint az a lány... ott a háború elején... a legelső gyerek... ott Sabácban...” A korabeli kritikák kiemelik, Dosztojevszkij Raszkolnyikovja óta nem írtak ennél megrendítőbb pszichikai leírást gyilkosságról. Az elbeszélést, melyet a háború embertelensége elleni tiltakozásként hangzott fel, szóba került Nobel békedíjra való felterjesztése is. A mű általános érvényű, miközben Móricz a földműves-katonáról szól, arról az „időtlen” szegény emberről is beszél, akit a történelmi sors, a háború körülményei egyszerre tesznek gyilkossá és áldozattá. Tíz évvel később, 1927-ben, a francia novellisták, közöttük Henri Barbusse is elismeréssel nyilatkozott az elbeszélésről, amikor az Gara László fordításában a párizsi L’Humanité folyóiratban megjelent.
