In June 1911, James Larkin, the Irish trade union leader and socialist activist, established a newspaper – The Irish Worker and People’s Advocate, as a pro-labour alternative to the capitalist-owned press. On Bloody Sunday, August 31st 1913, the Dublin Metropolitan Police brutally charged a workers’ rally led by Larkin and by James Connolly in Sackville Street. By the end of September that year, 25,000 men were off work, just in time for winter. The strikers were supported for a time, but the Lockout ended in defeat, and some people say the Left in Ireland has never quite recovered.
