In 1933, Jews lived in every country of Europe. The largest Jewish populations were in eastern Europe where many lived in predominantly Jewish towns or villages, called shtetls. These photos, taken before the Holocaust, show people from the shtetl of Ejszyszki (Eh-Shish-Kee). Approximately million Jews lived in countries occupied by or allied with Nazi Germany during World War II. By the war’s end, out of every European Jews were dead, including almost all of Ejszyszki’s Jews.
