The Justice

This silver sculpture is an allegory of Justice, identified by the symbols hold by the female figure, the sword and the scales. The marks on the piece reveal that it was made in the Real Fábrica de Platería Martínez (Royal Manufacture of Silverwork Martínez). / During the reign of Isabella II there was a notable rise of precious metalwork objects requested by private customers for decorating their rooms, especially the burgeoning bourgeoisie. These pieces are associated with tributes and public gifts that have an engraved dedication and the symbolic iconography alluding to the circumstances of the commission, as we can see in this case. This piece is a gift from the town of Medina de Pomar (Burgos) to Mr. Fernando Álvarez Martínez in 1849 after his appointment as Under-secretary of Grace and Justice.
