In addition to large office typewriters, portable typewriters began to be built around 1900. The Hermes Baby of 1935 with an overall height of 6 cm and weighing 4 kg was the first typewriter to fit into a briefcase. Authors Ernest Hemingway, John Steinbeck, and Peter Härtling as well as Homo Faber in Max Frisch’s novel of the same name composed on a Hermes Baby.
